The season’s first snowfall lashed the fields of the Kashmir Valley on Saturday, December 12, while the higher ranges of Jammu and Kashmir got weighty snowfall, the Met Office said.
“True to form, light to direct snowfall happened in fields of the Valley during the night while substantial snowfall happened in the higher compasses of J&K and Ladakh,” authority of the Met division said.
“There would be an improvement in the general climate condition from today onwards. No significant snowfall is normal till December 20, during which the climate is relied upon to remain mostly dry,” the authority added.
Srinagar got three creeps of snow on Saturday, while Gulmarg got over a foot of new snowfall.
Every significant thruway, including the Srinagar-Jammu, Srinagar-Leh, and the Mughal Road are shut down for traffic on Saturday.
There was new snowfall of almost a foot in the Bannihal area of Srinagar-Jammu parkway.
The base temperature was less 0.6 degree Celsius in Srinagar, short 0.9 in Pahalgam and less 4 in Gulmarg on Saturday.
Leh town of Ladakh recorded less 6.1, Kargil less 3, and Drass short 6.3 as the base temperature on Saturday.
Jammu city had 10.3, Katra 8.6, Batote less 0.7, Bannihal 0.2 and Bhaderwah less 0.4 as the night’s most minimal temperatures.
